Thinking About Moving to Long Beach? Here’s What You Need to Know

Are you considering a move to Long Beach? Whether you're drawn to the city for its beaches, culture, or proximity to Southern California’s top attractions, Long Beach is a place that offers a little bit of everything. But like any city, it has its pros and cons. Let’s dive into the key factors you should consider before making Long Beach your new home.

Pro 1: The Weather

The weather in Long Beach is one of the biggest draws for people moving here. With an average temperature around 70 degrees year-round, it’s hard to beat the climate. Sure, we get a bit of rain, a few weeks of intense heat in the summer, and the occasional windy day, but mostly, it's a pleasant, temperate environment. If you’re near the coast (about two miles away from the beach like I am), you’ll find the temperatures stay comfortable all year long. Inland areas can get warmer, but coastal Long Beach stays mild and inviting.

Con 1: Traffic

As an urban center, Long Beach does have its fair share of traffic. Like many cities in Southern California, navigating busy roads and finding parking can be challenging. Neighborhoods with permitted parking and limited street spaces can make things a little tricky, and it’s important to be prepared for that reality. While it's less congested than nearby Santa Monica, we’re still a busy city with a lot of cars on the road.

Pro 2: Location, Location, Location

Long Beach’s location is a major selling point. Situated right on the border of Los Angeles and Orange counties, Long Beach offers easy access to both. Whether you need to head to downtown Los Angeles, explore the Inland Empire, or enjoy the attractions of Orange County, it’s all within a short drive. It’s a convenient base for exploring everything that Southern California has to offer, with the bonus of being near the beach.

Con 2: Air Quality

While coastal Long Beach enjoys fresher air, the city does face some air quality challenges, particularly the further inland you go. Long Beach is a port city, home to the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles. As a result, there’s more pollution in certain areas, although the city is making strides to improve its environmental impact. The Long Beach Port is one of the greenest in America, with continuous efforts to reduce pollution. However, air quality can vary depending on where you are in the city.

Pro 3: Food Scene

If you love food, you’ll feel right at home in Long Beach. From casual eateries to fine dining, there’s something to satisfy every taste. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood by the shore or a gourmet coffee from one of the many local roasters, you’re covered. Long Beach is home to a variety of international cuisines, with excellent Mexican, Asian, and Mediterranean options. If you're a foodie, this city will impress.

Con 3: Drought Conditions

Southern California is notorious for its drought conditions, and Long Beach is no exception. Though the city is surrounded by water, it’s technically a desert beach, meaning water conservation is always a concern. Long Beach frequently experiences water restrictions, and in some years, residents may not be allowed to water their lawns at all. While this doesn’t necessarily impact daily life regularly, it’s something to consider if you enjoy maintaining a lush, green yard.

Pro 4: Diversity

One of the greatest things about Long Beach is its rich diversity. The city is a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds, creating a vibrant, inclusive community. From different cuisines to festivals celebrating various cultures, there’s always something new to discover. Whether it’s a different language spoken on the streets or a cultural event to attend, Long Beach is a city that celebrates its differences.

Con 4: Crime

As with any large urban area, crime can be a concern in certain parts of Long Beach. However, the good news is that the crime rate has been steadily decreasing in recent years. Long Beach’s police department does an excellent job of keeping residents safe, and overall, it’s a relatively safe place to live considering its size and population. Still, like any city, it’s important to stay aware and take the necessary precautions.

Pro 5: Long Beach Airport

Long Beach has its very own airport, and it’s a big convenience for residents. The Long Beach Airport (LGB) is the 10th busiest airport in California and serves as the base for Southwest Airlines. Though it may not have the international flights of LAX, it’s a much more manageable airport for domestic travel. Plus, with easy access to public transit and nearby highways, it’s simple to hop on a plane without the hassle of a major airport.

Pro 6: The Beaches

Of course, no discussion of Long Beach would be complete without mentioning the beaches. With miles of coastline, bike paths, and beachfront dining options, Long Beach is the perfect place for beach lovers. However, it’s worth noting that our beaches are sheltered by a breakwater, so the waves aren’t great for surfing. But if you love the beach for lounging, sunbathing, or walking, Long Beach is a paradise.

Pro 7: Parks

Long Beach is home to 107 parks, offering plenty of green space for outdoor activities. El Dorado Regional Park, one of the largest, is a favorite for families and outdoor enthusiasts. With so many parks throughout the city, it’s easy to find a quiet spot to relax, have a picnic, or take a leisurely walk.

Pro 8: Shopping & Entertainment

Long Beach offers excellent shopping, from boutique stores in retro neighborhoods to the massive Long Beach Towne Center. In addition, you'll find a wide range of entertainment options, including movie theaters, live music venues, and art galleries. The city’s eclectic vibe makes it a fantastic destination for those who love to shop, dine, and explore.

Pro 9: Pet-Friendly

Long Beach is an incredibly pet-friendly city. Whether you're taking your dog to one of the many parks or enjoying a meal at a restaurant with outdoor seating, there’s no shortage of places to take your furry friends. There are even dog beaches where dogs can run off-leash and get sandy, which is always a big hit with pet owners.

Pro 10: Biking and Walking

Long Beach is regularly listed among the top bike-friendly cities in the U.S., with dedicated bike lanes and trails throughout the city. It’s also incredibly walkable, with pedestrian-friendly streets and walking paths that make it easy to explore the area on foot. If you love biking or walking, you’ll appreciate the ease with which you can navigate the city.

Pro 11: Culture

Long Beach is a city rich in cultural offerings. Whether it’s visiting the Long Beach Museum of Art, exploring local galleries, or attending performances at the Queen Mary or the Long Beach Performing Arts Center, there’s always something to do. The city’s diversity is reflected in its cultural events, art, and community programs, making it an exciting place for anyone looking to embrace a dynamic cultural experience.

Conclusion

Long Beach is a city full of opportunities, and while it’s not without its challenges, the lifestyle here is one of excitement, diversity, and beauty. From the year-round perfect weather to the vibrant cultural scene, Long Beach is a fantastic place to live for those who want to enjoy all that Southern California has to offer. Whether you’re moving for work, family, or just the beach, Long Beach has something for everyone.
